Natalie had left so suddenly. One minute she’d been smiling at Lakeisha, gazing adoringly at baby Kofi, and then it was as if a shadow had crossed over her and she’d suddenly made her excuses and left.

It was most definitely odd, and when he found her moments later in the staff room he was really beginning to get concerned. ‘You okay?’

‘Fine.’ She stared back. ‘Just tired, you know?’

He felt it must be more than that. She’d seemed terribly upset at hearing they’d performed an emergency hysterectomy on Lakeisha. Almost like it was personal news. He thought back to their night together. To her scars. She’d had hip surgery, that was clear. But there’d been other marks. Laparoscopy scars. And a jagged silver line across her pelvis.

A car accident, she’d said. But what if it was more than that? Could Natalie not have children? Was that what this was all about?

‘If you don’t want to go for that coffee later, we can postpone to another time.’

She looked up at him. ‘No. I still want to go.’ She managed a smile.

‘You’re sure? I don’t want to push you into anything.’

‘No. It’ll be good to talk. Away from the hospital.’

He nodded. ‘Okay. I’ll pick you up later.’
